No, this is not about learning how to use Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.  Social studies education most commonly refers to the training of p of various social science disciplines.

Social Studies is important because this is the subject that teaches the history of the world and the history of a nation. In an age where to study is seen as “old school,” the subject plays a vital and crucial role in the civic, social and intellectual development of the individual student.

The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

The Ten Themes are organizing strands for social studies programs. The ten themes are:

1 CULTURE
2 TIME, CONTINUITY, AND CHANGE
3 PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS
4 INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT AND IDENTITY
5 INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, AND INSTITUTIONS
6 POWER, AUTHORITY, AND GOVERNANCE
7 PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND CONSUMPTION
8 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY
9 GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
10 CIVIC IDEALS AND PRACTICES

Students are encouraged to seek information, acquire key concepts, and employ strategies, automatically and invisibly as independent readers through a series of questions, discussions, and writing activities. Calkids Learning Academy offers all of these integrated themes on an ongoing basis so students will be better informed to become better citizens.
